Hawaii is the birthplace of modern surfing, and Maui is one of the best places in the world to catch your first wave. Warm water, gentle beginner breaks and patient local instructors mean most first-timers stand up in their very first lesson.
Best beginner surf spots on Maui
- The Cove, Kihei: small, consistent waves in shallow water with a short paddle out, which makes it a favorite for lessons year-round. It gets crowded, and booties help with sea urchins.
- Kāʻanapali Beach: gentle waves with few rocks, right in front of the West Maui resorts.
- Launiupoko and Puamana (West Maui): long, slow rolling waves that are great for beginners. Watch for reef at low tide.
- Pohaku Beach (S-Turns): manageable waves when winter swells arrive.
Surf schools pick the spot based on daily swell and wind, so you’ll always be taken where conditions suit beginners.
What a first surf lesson looks like
- Beach briefing: safety, ocean awareness and surf etiquette
- Land practice: how to lie on the board, paddle and pop up to your feet
- In the water: your instructor helps position you and gives you a push into waves until you can catch them yourself
- Soft-top boards: large, stable foam boards designed for learning
Most beginner lessons run around two hours, which is plenty of time to stand up and ride several waves.
Group, semi-private or private?
- Group lessons: the most affordable option and fun with friends
- Semi-private: more coaching time with a small group
- Private lessons: the fastest progress, ideal for kids, nervous beginners or advancing surfers
