Just nine miles across the ʻAuʻau Channel from West Maui, Lanai feels like a different world: no traffic lights, quiet beaches and some of the clearest water in Hawaii. For many visitors, a Lanai snorkel trip ends up being the highlight of their Maui vacation.
Why snorkel Lanai instead of Molokini?
Molokini Crater is famous, but it can be busy. Lanai’s south and west coasts see far fewer boats, the reefs are healthy and colorful, and the crossing itself is part of the fun, with frequent dolphin sightings and humpback whales in winter. If you’ve already done Molokini, or just want something quieter, Lanai is the natural next step.
What you’ll see
- Spinner dolphins: pods often rest and travel along Lanai’s south coast. Boats keep a respectful distance and never chase or swim with resting dolphins.
- Healthy reefs: lava-rock formations, coral heads and caverns full of reef fish
- Green sea turtles cruising the reef
- Humpback whales on the crossing in winter, roughly December through April
Lanai snorkel spots
- Hulopoʻe Bay: Lanai’s best-known shore snorkel spot, a protected marine preserve with calm water and abundant fish
- Mānele Bay: good snorkeling along the rocks near the small boat harbor
- Shark Fin Cove: a boat-access-only site on the south coast
- Puʻu Pehe (Sweetheart Rock): a dramatic sea stack east of Hulopoʻe, best for confident swimmers
Choosing your Lanai trip
Sailing catamarans
The most relaxed way to go, with shade, restrooms, food and often a sail home. Options include Trilogy Discover Lanai on a 64-foot catamaran and the 24-guest Paragon Lanai Coastal Snorkel Sail. Pacific Whale Foundation and Quicksilver also run Lanai dolphin snorkel cruises.
Rafts
Rafts are faster, smaller and more adventurous. They get closer to sea caves and coastline and often cover more of the island. Try Ocean Riders Circumnavigate Lanai, Hawaii Ocean Rafting, Captain Steve’s Deluxe Lanai Dolphin Snorkel or the 16-guest Ultimate Rafting. Expect a bumpier ride.
Private charters
Groups of 10 or more often save with a private boat, such as Kaanapali Ocean Adventures or Kainani Sailing Charters.
Ferry and land tours
Prefer to explore on your own? The Expeditions ferry crosses to Mānele Harbor, a short walk from Hulopoʻe Beach, and the Lanai Trekker tour adds a guided off-road adventure. Departure harbors have changed since the 2023 Lahaina fire, so confirm your departure point when booking.
Tips for your Lanai snorkel day
- Go in the morning; the channel is usually calmer before the trade winds pick up.
- Take motion-sickness medication beforehand, especially on a raft.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen or a rash guard.
- Never touch coral or approach turtles and dolphins; let them come and go on their own.
- Bring a towel, a light layer and a waterproof phone case.
