1 x Maui Pineapple Tours, The Farm Tour

The Pineapple Industry on Maui reflects on gentler times during the Plantation Era. The plantation era extended for over 100 years during the agriculture growth period. They came from all over Asia seeking a better way of life in Hawaii. Thus, began the Plantation Days on Maui. Our culture is a mix of immigrants who blended with the island culture creating what you experience today, a spirit of Aloha.

To really understand how special the Plantation Days were on Maui every visitor should tour the pineapple fields of Upcountry Maui. The traditional values and heritage of most of the people who make up our Island population were created during these times. Although the Plantation Days are just a memory of a more gentle time, the true meaning of the Aloha Spirit and the underlying culture of Maui is still present today.

1 x Maui Pineapple Tours, Pineapple Tour with Lunch

Pineapple was a main agricultural industry during the Plantation Era on Maui. The Plantation Days reflect a time when cultures came together, creating a blended culture that extended for over 100 years.

From the middle 19th century, workers were imported from China, Japan and the Philippines to work in the sugar cane and later the pineapple fields of Maui. Longing for a new life with a promise of freedom, they came by the thousands. Camps were set-up by the plantation owners to house the workers. This created the Plantation Era on Maui.

The days were long; the work was hard with the tropical sun beating down hour after hour. Yet the workers endured and in doing so found a better way of life complete with the freedom they sought.

The pineapple fields upcountry are the only fields that remain in Hawaii. Due to the low cost of imported pineapple from other nations, the industry met a foe, it couldn’t work around. The fields today are hybrid pineapples known as Maui Gold. They are smaller and sweeter than the average pineapple.

1 x Maui Pineapple and Distillery Tour

The Haliimaile Distilling Company provides a unique perspective of the different uses for pineapple. Once a major export, the pineapple industry has all but faded from the landscape of Maui. An industry that one covered 10.000’s of acres from West Maui, the North Shore and upcountry has declined to an enterprise that specializes in Maui Gold Pineapple. Maui Gold is a hybrid pineapple that is smaller and sweeter than your average pineapple.

The tour is divided into two segments. The first portion is of the pineapple fields and cannery. During the tour, you will discover the roots of an industry that was a staple of Maui for over a hundred years. The Plantation Days on Maui were fueled by the population boom from Asia. These different cultures blended together in the plantation camps that created the culture we see today on the Valley Isle.

As the industry declined growers began to understand if they wanted to survive they had to get creative in marketing pineapple. Two things happen. The first one was the creation of the hybrid pineapple, Maui Gold. The second was introducing pineapple as a main ingredient for wine (Maui Pineapple Wine) and the blend into spirits. The Haliimaile Distilling Company opened their doors with pineapple infused into rum, vodka, gin and whisky. The flavors are unique.
