The Highlights

Ths bay is a local favorite and for good reason. It’s not the best for visitors. Surfing here requires extensive skill and knowledge of the reef system. This is not the best place to lay out and get a tan not to mention swimming here can be quite dangerous due to the rocky ocean bottom and strong rip currents. So why take the time out? It is a region that is teeming with a unique ecology. The first beach access since Ho’okipa Beach Park has an amazing view from the Hana Highway and has a gorgeous view of the Honomanu Valley. The Honomanu Falls feed a stream that forms a freshwater pool at the beach that you can swim in.

Word of Cautioncaution symbol

The road down to Honomanu Bay is not treacherous by any means, however, if you do not have a 4×4 or all-wheel drive you may want to park along the main highway and walk down. The beach access is a dirt road so after a rainstorm, it does become muddy and difficult for most vehicles. The 5 min walk from the main highway is definitely worth it.

As previously stated this beach has some characteristics that make it less attractive than many of the other beaches on Maui. This includes strong riptides, especially in the winter months, and a boulder riddled sea floor. If you do decide to get in the water tread carefully.

There are no on-site facilities at Honomanu Bay, so keep that in mind when planning on making the trip out. There’s plenty of mother nature just in case.
